So there's basically a myth about corsets, perpetually reinforced by media, that back when they were commonly worn, they were tightlaced, it was hard to breathe, women fainted, etc. This is just blatantly untrue. The reason waists looked so small was 1: people were legitimately smaller/thinner and 2: they were worn with huge skirts that exaggerated hips so made the waist seem tiny in comparison. People did manual labor all day wearing corsets. And some people swear that they help their back pain and other things. Sure, makes sense. I've decided, based on a very scientific and objective method, that this myth originally started because women _stopped_ wearing them for a while, got used to it, then put them back on for whatever reason, and were like "oh my god, I can't breathe, this is a nightmare, it's so restrictive." I definitely did not come to this conclusion after putting on an underwired bra for the first time since March.
